Since its founding in 1984, the Choir has been an accomplished choir in residence at the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, the Pope’s Diocese. It has performed at Liturgies presided over by the Holy Father as Bishop of Rome in many significant celebrations, including at the Beatification Ceremony for Saint Mother Theresa of Calcutta, the singing in the Vatican (Saint Peter’s Basilica) during the final farewell to Pope John Paul II and his upcoming Beatification Ceremony to be held on May 1st, 2011. The yearly Mass on Palm Sunday with the Holy Father, the Presbyterial Ordinations, and at the feast of Corpus Christi. It has also graced the liturgies of the Great Jubilee of 2000, the opening and the closing of the Holy Door in the Lateran Basilica, the 17th International Eucharistic Congress, the 15th World Youth Day, and the Third Jubilee of Families in 2000: a world meeting of the Holy Father with Catholic families. Led by Monsignor Marco Frisina, the Choir performs classical pieces from the international repertoire as well as original compositions of Maestro Frisina, such as “Jesus Christ, you are my life” which was composed for the 15th World Youth Day and adopted as the music for all the Youth Meetings with the Holy Father.
For the U.S. Tour, they will also perform a rare repertoire of Italian songs from the ‘30s to the ‘50s, specifically rearranged by Mnsg. Frisina for the occasion.
The Choir has appeared throughout Italy as well as in Germany, Austria, France, Malta, Poland, Czech Republic and Israel and their collaborations over the years have been internationally recognized. Acclaimed pairings have included artists such as Italian superstar Mina and Andrea Bocelli for whom Mnsg. Frisina composed and arranged pieces from the most celebrated repertory of classical music. The renowned Livingston Symphony Orchestra is currently enjoying its 55th season, providing symphonic, concerto, operatic, and popular works to its appreciative and enthusiastic audience. Originating in June, 1956 as a small ensemble providing the orchestral music for a town production of the Mikado, the group began to take hold in the local community, as Livingston saw the need to provide a classical music scene to its residents. Under the expert leadership of internationally-acclaimed conductor and music director Istvan Jaray, the orchestra has grown over the years to become one of the finest regional symphonies in the metropolitan area. Born in Hungary, Maestro Jaray has conducted major orchestras in his homeland, including the Concert Orchestra of Budapest and Savaria Symphony, in addition to conducting appearances with the Symphonies of Detroit, Milwaukee, Chicago, Brussels Radio Symphony, and Victoria Symphony in Canada, to name a few. He is presently Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra. The Livingston Symphony Orchestra is a cohesive group of individuals, comprised of highly talented, musically trained members from near and far, and many walks of life, whose common goal is to spread the joy of music and the peace which music creates, to all. The orchestra presents a series of four concerts per season, from November to May. It is keenly involved in addressing the ever-growing need to expose young children and novices to classical music, through its annual Young Peoples Concert. The orchestra also conducts a yearly Young Artists Competition, which draws from the finest musical talent in the tri-state area, open to youth ages 14 to 21. The winner of the rigorous audition and evaluation receives a scholarship award, and is given the opportunity to perform a concerto with the orchestra. Many of the Young Artists Competition winners have gone on to study performance at the conservatory level and beyond, and several have become artists in their own right, soloing with major symphony orchestras. A non-profit organization, the Livingston Symphony Orchestra receives funding solely through the generosity of foundations, grants, and the public at large. The orchestra maintains as its mission to help keep music alive for generations to come.
